It looks like Universal Pictures has decided to slam the brakes on production for Bioshock, an upcoming videogame adaptation. With Gore Verbinski helming the project, it should’ve been expected that the director would want high production values for his film. After all, he did make The Ring and the Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy.
But $160 million is a lot to swallow at the moment, as videogame flicks are typically shoe-horned with low budgets and lack of accuracy. Hopefully Universal will change their minds on this one. As of now, the L.A. shoot has been cancelled and the studio is looking to move production to London. This is what Verbinski had to say:
“We were asked by Universal to move the film outside the U.S. to take advantage of a tax credit. We are evaluating whether this is something we want to do. In the meantime, the film is in a holding pattern.”
Hopefully he talks some sense into the studio and shows off his track record to get this film going again. We’ll keep you updated as this situation develops.
