Gamasutra has compiled NPD information on GameStop, only to find out a surprising fact. GameStop now controls 21% of the U.S. game sales market in new game and console sales.
And to top that off, GameStop has 6200 outlets spread across the globe. The company started off as Babbages, a small retailer based in Texas. But through numerous mergers and acquisitions of companies like Funco and Electronics Boutique, it has become the most popular videogame retail chain in the world. Though it makes most of its profit off used game sales, Best Buy and other retailers are looking to end GameStop’s monopoly in the used games market.
