Activision‘s sequel to one of the best first-person shooters of this generation, Modern Warfare 2, is already guarrenteed a blockbuster hit. But will it be the best-selling title of the year?
Mike Hickey of Janco Partners financial analyst firm has set a sales prediction for Modern Warfare 2 at 11.1 million units by the time the calendar year is over, besting even the record breaking sales of Grand Theft Auto IV.
“We believe Modern Warfare 2 will likely be the largest video game release for 2009. For the Company’s fiscal Q409 period (Dec. ending), we anticipate the sell through to consumers of 11.1 million units for an estimated retail value of $803 million and sell-in approximating 12.4 million units, for an approximated sales value of $666 million (we assume demand is 90% of supply).”
It certainly will be interesting to see the sales of this game since it will be put up against a slew of other blockbuster titles such as Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Assassin’s Creed 2, Activision’s own Guitar Hero 5, and even Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time. Sure, genre differences make some of these titles uncomparable to each other, but since they’re all coming out this holiday season they will definitely affect each other’s overall sales.
