After EA, publishers of Dante’s Inferno revealed that the pre-E3 religious protest against the title was staged, a real protest against this practice was bound to happen. And honestly, we saw this coming.
Christian devotees were not at all amused by EA’s fake protest by alleged Christian worshipers. Instead, actual Christian groups have taken offense, stating that it serves as an example of how the religion is viewed upon by society. Margaret Cabaniss writes:
“It’s been clear for a while now that the entertainment industry views Christians on the whole as priggish, thin-skinned fun-killers… Has anybody at EA actually read the Inferno?”
On top of this, a website devoted to Catholic video gamers (aptly named CatholicVideoGamers) shared their opinion on the situation at hand and even made a suggestion that most gamers would agree with anyways:
“Gamers of all varieties will buy this product if its, well, actually a good game. So instead of engaging in a shamelessly anti-Christian stunt to promote your poor excuse of a product, maybe you ought to work on making this game, you know, something better than a blatant God of War rip-off and make it, ya know, something worthwhile?
Just saying…”
While coming from a biased point-of-view, the blog post does serve a point: why bring politics and religion into the marketing of this game if it’s actually supposed to be a good game?
