Facial recognition isn’t exactly new to the world of gadgets, but if what SCEE‘s head of Developer Services, Kish Hirani, says is true, PlayStation will be receiving this coveted technology. During last week’s Develop Conference in Brighton, Hirani explained that the new facial recognition software will allow the PS3 the ability to perform tasks.
These tasks include the ability to:
“…detect gender and even the age of the face, separate facial features such as the nose, eyes and ears, and even detect whether you’re smiling or not.”
During the key note, with regards to the PlayStation Eye‘s new motion controller, Hirani made it clear that developers wanting to take advantage do not have to start from scratch.
“If you are working with the PlayStation Eye and think there is some new tech you’re going to have to develop for the motion controllers, just get in touch with us. We have a wealth of libraries available, and the chances are you won’t have to develop any technology yourself.”
Sony has been known to work closely with various developers and goes to great extents to ensure that excellent games are produced that highlight the technical prowess of PlayStation hardware. With Hirani promising that Sony will “provide [developers] will all of the tech” in exchange for “great games”, it’s clear that the way in which Sony will handle the premiere of this new technology will not be any different.
A description of Hirani’s key note on the Brighton Developer Conference website mentioned “coverage of several real-world examples of such techniques as used in recent and soon to be released PS3 and PSP titles from both Sony Computer Entertainment first party and external developers.”
PSP you say? Interesting…
