Gran Turismo 5, Polyphony Digital’s newest installment in its flagship racing series, made a serious impact at GamesCom 2009 with numerous kiosks showcasing the game’s new damage system, a first for the series. A huge list of details were posted on Polyphony Digital’s site during the event (which have mysteriously disappeared), but a translation of those details by GT Planet and 1UP reveals just how massive the game will be when it finally releases.
GT5 is scheduled to feature 1,000 cars. Yes, you read that right. The game will ship with 1,000 meticulously detailed cars, with 170 vehicles receiving special attention to their interiors, which will show damage if said cars are wrecked during a race. Though only a group of vehicles within the game will have damage, as noted in a recent interview with Kazunori Yamauchi. And though it’s not clear if this is due to licensing disputes with car manufacturers, it’s not hard to image Polyphony sneaking in interior damage for certain vehicles through downloadable patches.
The game will also include electric vehicles, such as the Honda Insight, Toyato Prius, and the newest Tesla road car. Unfortunately, Porsche is still a no-go due to the fact that the company signed a special deal with an unnamed game developer (two guesses as to who that is), but at least Lamborghini and Ferrari are still on board.
And lastly, the game should have 20 unique tracks, and a total of 60 different variations of these tracks. If that doesn’t fill up a dual-layer blu-ray disc, I don’t know what will. As always, stick with PlayStation LifeStyle for all your gaming updates!
