Japanese PS3 Sales Stumble

ps3-dominates-wii-and-360

In the week leading up to the announcement of the PS3 Slim at GamesCom 2009, something unprecedented happened in the PlayStation 3’s native land of Japan. Though the Sony-bred console typically holds its own against the Nintendo Wii, it actually fell to the bottom of the charts last week.

Though this may be due to the countless rumors warning of an impending price drop for the system, we’re placing our bets on the low inventory of 80GB PS3s in anticipation of the PS3 Slim’s release on September 1st. Here is the current number of units sold by game console last week in Japan.

  • DSi: 87,936 (70,066)
  • Wii: 47,732 (47,140)
  • PSP : 39,882 (33,893)
  • Xbox 360: 9,162 (5,436)
  • DS Lite: 7,921 (8,699)
  • PS3: 5,944 (5,826)
  • PS2 : 4,907 (4,601)
