Where the game really shines though is the Franchise mode, whether it is online or offline. Yes you read that correctly; there is an Online Franchise mode. It is a full fledged Franchise that can be played by online participants, and you can even manage your team online via internet browser. So if you are bored at work and want to make some trades, update the depth chart, etc., all of that can be done. But make no mistake, the offline mode is no slouch. Countless hours will once again be spent in this mode by Maddenites around the nation. EA Sports have tweaked many things within the mode itself, including the trading. Everyone pretty much got rid of crappy players in Madden NFL 09 for higher-than-possible draft picks for that particular player. Thankfully, this exploit has been tossed out the window.
They have also added a news feed within the Franchise menu that keeps players updated with recent events that have occurred within the league. Pre-game, halftime, and postgame shows have also been implemented in this year’s version. I have to say though, the halftime show is lacking in many areas. I like the direction that it’s going, but there is a ton of room for improvement in next year’s Madden installment. Gamers have been begging for a decent halftime show for years, and though it’s not great, at least they made an effort to include it in the game.
The offense in the game has been touched up. Blocking has improved drastically, and gamers can actually see the pocket developing as they drop back with the quarterback. And just as they can easily see it develop, they can also see it completely collapse. All it takes is an adequate pass rush. Since the blocking has been revamped, the running game is more of a challenge at times. The defensive line will key off what the ball carrier does, so some patience is required for the correct moment to hit the open lane.
Defensively, the coverage is a lot better. With the cornerbacks having to look at the ball to adjust to it, it makes double coverage and man-to-man that much more necessary and realistic. Don’t expect an average cornerback to cover a dominant receiver like Andre Johnson and not get completely embarrassed out there on the field. You will need to decide what adjustments to make in a short amount of time. Pass rushing is probably one of the most fun things that I have experienced. It is actually a challenge at times, now that the blocking has been revamped. So when you actually get that sack on the quarterback, you will feel like you not only worked hard for it, but deserved it.
