Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time was originally released by Konami, back in 1991. The arcade title then made a transition over to consoles, appearing on SNES on April 12, 1992. Now, more than 17 years later, a remake of the classics beat ’em up title has come to PlayStation Network.
In the game, you can play as one of the four turtle heroes, Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, or Raphael. Each hero has a different weapon set, however, they don’t really differ in terms of movesets. The game has two modes to play from, either Single-Player or Multi-Player. Singleplayer throws you into the campaign with one player only, which can be quite difficult at some points. The multi-player mode features Local or Online, which is nice. Local can have up to four players, each being assigned to a turtle of their choosing. Online is the same, except you can team up with anyone in the world.
The game has a simple premise. Shredder is causing mayhem, after Krang steals the Statue of Liberty during a news broadcast. Your objective is to stop Shredder, and get the Statue back. The game starts at 3:00AM, in New York City, as you try and find Shredder. However, your chase stops suddenly, as Shredder opens up a time warp with the player being sucked in. Hence the title of the game, right?
Gameplay is exactly like what you would expect from a remake; the gameplay has not changed. You have two attacks, using the Square and Triangle button. You go through levels, such as New York 1991, to the Old West 1885, and beat the bad guys. It’s very simple, with the player not being able to get by a certain area until all the enemies are killed. Once you get by all these areas, you will have a boss to face at the end. During the course of the levels, you’ll be able to pick up boxes of pizza for health. Also, power ups are handy, which give the turtle of your choice invincibility, while you spin and take out enemies. The gameplay is changed up once in a while, with two surfing levels in the game (one in the sewers of 1991, and one in the sky 2020. The first surfing level is tricky, and incredibly so if you want to get a trophy for avoiding all the traps. Trust me, it’s hard.
