Gamers are a very sentimental breed, forever holding certain games, franchises, characters, even consoles dearly to their hearts. Sonic the Hedgehog definitely fits that bill, with many old-school gamers long wishing for a proper “throwback” follow-up to 1994’s SEGA Genesis classic, Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
16 years later, fans are getting their wish. SEGA has recently announced Sonic the Hedgehog 4, and much like the recent Mega Man games from Capcom, the series will be returning to it’s 2D roots. The supersonic speed side-scroller will come in the form of downloadable episodes via the PlayStation Store, with Sonic 4 The Hedgehog: Episode I kicking things off this summer.
So, the old Sonic we grew to love is back, but what about the gameplay? According to a listing on the ESRB website, fans wanting more of the classic gameplay we fell in love with back in the early 90s, will surely be satisfied.
The ESRB listing for Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I which arrives this summer, states:
This is a side-scrolling adventure game in which players zoom through themed levels, collect gold rings, and jump on tiny robot enemies. Players earn points for collecting “power-ups” and freeing tiny animals that are trapped in the robots. During boss battles at the end of levels, players may encounter an arch nemesis in a mechanical device that gets charred and emits some flames when damaged.
Expect to see everything you know and love about the series, gold rings, ultra-fast speeds, and of course Dr. Robotnik.
