Almost three years ago, we were in for a surprise with the announcement of a Penny Arcade video game. Called “Penny Arcade Adventures,” the downloadable title was revealed to be a 4-part episodic quest, and the first video game for the comic duo Gabe and Tycho. The first episode released nearly a year after the announcement, with the second coming only months later. However, it’s been a full year and a half since the release of episode two, and nothing has been announced or mentioned regarding episodes 3 and 4. Finally, news on a third Penny Arcade Adventure episode has been unveiled – but it’s not the good news we were hoping for.
Mike Krahulik, one of the two authors of Penny Arcade, has announced today that there will be no Episode 3 of Penny Arcade Adventures, saying “We’re actually not making a third episode of the game.” The series was not looking promising, as the second episode only achieved one-third the sales of the first. Jerry Holkins, the other half of the Penny Arcade team, also commented on the discontinuation of Penny Arcade Adventures:
[The game’s developer] Hothead has DeathSpank and they have a chance to do something really cool with it. And they need to have an opportunity to make it incredible. They definitely could’ve done both games. I think they could’ve made DeathSpank and Episode 3 but I think Episode 3 would’ve suffered. I mean, I know it would have suffered. So we’d rather not do it than do it half-assed and so we’re going to finish that story but it’s going to be on our website.
You can purchase a $15 bundle pack containing both episodes of Penny Arcade Adventures on PlayStation Network, available now.
