The graphics in video games are progressing so rapidly, that in the near future, the industry, will in fact, reach, “photorealism”. While the graphics are improving by leaps and bounds, the AI, both enemy and friendly, is not as advanced. Developer Splash Damage is ensuring that their latest title, Brink, will be one of the most realistic shooters on the market. So confident, they are, that a member of the development team spoke in a recent interview, and made some brow-raising revelations.
Speaking with Skewed & Reviewd, creative director Richard Ham compared the game’s AI to that of a human being.
“Our AI is capable of doing literally every action that you can.
“Not only are the enemies more ruthless and surprising, but your teammates are more self reliant and useful. In Brink, you won’t have to babysit your AI squad mates and make sure they do their jobs.
“Brink’s AI has to be great because of the way we blend single player and multiplayer gaming seamlessly. At any time, you could be playing against AI or against other human players, and our goal is that you can’t tell the difference.”
And in conclusion, Ham added:
“Actually, if you’re not doing well, they’ll babysit you!”
Ham’s boast is certainly exciting. Whether or not the game will deliver is a whole different argument. Until then, we will just have to wait and see. Brink releases later this year.
