As most of us have probably expected, the idea of motion controls making a debut outside the realm of the Wii has quite a few people a little skeptical, and with good reason. Well, it looks like some of the industry’s finest are beginning to sound-off regarding the implementation of motion controls on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox360, starting with Capcom’s president, Mr. Haruhiro Tsujimoto.
Regarding the implementation of motion controls on the PS3 and 360, Tsujimoto stated the following:
“If there isn’t a strong business model message from the platform holders about how they will develop [motion controllers] with users, then I don’t think it will go well,”
No one can really argue with Mr. Tsukimoto, as has been experienced in the past, anything outside of controller-based gaming has ultimately failed due to a lack of developer support and the fact that hardware developers typically made any motion controls “second class citizens” of sorts due to the inability to even play most gaming genres. If Sony wishes to make PlayStation Move a success, then they had better show far more support for it than they had with the PS2’s Eyetoy and, to an extent, the use of SixAxis motion controls on the PS3, with a strong line of titles to boot.
For companies like Capcom, it’s easy to see why the move to motion controls would be a difficult one, as they’re currently doing quite well with their big-name franchises, and not all of their titles really have the ability to make the transition to a motion based gaming spectrum. Add to that any lack of support or weakness to push the hardware and you’ll definitely have a hefty number of developers backing out. It is indeed nice to see that game developers themselves are sharing the same concerns as the gaming community at large regarding the latest onslaught of ulterior gaming methods.
