Naughty Dog Looking to Squeeze More Out of PS3

For many of us that have experienced the world of Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series, we can easily testify that the two games were phenomenal with its over-the-top production values.  Many other developers, including Ninja Theory, have looked to the California based developers as a touchstone for building games on the PS3.  It now seems that Naughty Dog aims to not let the competition catch up either, as they now claim to have more in store with the PS3.

When Naughty Dog developed Uncharted 2, they had pulled out all the stops on the PS3 platform to optimize the game to run at 90% -100% of the console’s SPU’s.  From the numbers given, many had assumed that what we saw with Uncharted 2, was probably going to be the best that the PS3 had to offer.  While other developers, such as Guerrilla Games, had tapped out the PS3’s power to 100%, Naughty Dog is aiming to “one up” the rest of the competition with Uncharted 3.

While speaking in a recent interview, Naughty Dog’s Arnie Meyer said that from a programming standpoint, they could shake more performance from Sony’s console.

“It’s very clear to us that there are still more ways we can optimize our engine and introduce new technology innovations.
“There are still engine-related projects that some of our programmers didn’t get around to working on or implementing [on Uncharted 2]. There’s definitely a good number of ways left for us to make really cool things happen on the engine level.”

If the above statements are true, then PS3 owners can look forward to another “Game-Of-The-Year” treat.  Keep in mind, that when Meyer made the above comment, Naughty Dog probably plans to achieve their goal without relying on the PS Move or Sony’s 3D technology.  For now, it looks like the race to max out the PS3 is far from over.
