Keiji Inafune’s departure from Capcom and it’s subsidiaries hit the industry like an earthquake — even thought the writing had been on the wall for some time. The first aftershock of his resignation appears to have had a negative effect on the most unlikely of places: the fighting game genre.
Yoshinori Ono, Street Fighter Series Producer, is troubled by the departure of Inafune-san and feels it will negatively impact his franchises. Inafune-san had requested that Ono-san obtain 1 million signatures for a Darkstalkers sequel. When asked in a tweet if Inafune-san’s departure would help or hurt Darkstalkers, Ono-san said:
He [was] very understanding about fighting games. [That’s the] answer. ;(
When a more direct statement was made that “Inafune is gone. So u can get [Darkstalkers 4] approved!” by a tweeter, Ono-san responded clearly by saying:
You’re way off base if you think that it. It harder for make new Fighting game…
It’s hard to tell just how much of an impact this will have on future titles like Darkstalkers and Street Fighter X Tekken. One thing is certain however, if the producer of those titles is concerned it’s going to be harder to make new titles then so should fans of the genre.
