Is there anything the NGP can’t do? It already does Uncharted, Killzone, and Call of Duty, but who is to say the games stop there? Epic Games is very excited about the device and is already working on what to do with it.
Thanks to the technical prowess of the NGP, as well as the beautiful, beautiful dual thumbstick layout, the sky seems to be the limit for Sony’s new handheld. Epic Games, creators of the Unreal Engine and renowned developer of the Xbox 360 (and PC) franchise, Gears of War, are already incredibly impressed. After showing off a tech demo of the iOS game Epic Citadel, Epic confirmed Unreal Engine 3 support for the device. Unreal on a portable system? It never seemed possible. But it doesn’t stop there. In an interview with Eurogamer, Epic VP Mark Rein believes that the device has quite the potential.
This is the kind of machine that a Gears of War-style experience would be appropriate on because it has the control layout that games like that are designed for and can produce some pretty compelling visuals. Activision announced Call of Duty for the device so of course a Gears-style game would also be appropriate.
Rein can’t even nail down his favorite aspect of the NGP.
This is a bit of a cop-out but I’d say it’s the complete package; multiple control methods, great screen, an OS that gives you low-level access to the hardware, great processing power on both CPU and GPU, GPS, 3G, dual cameras – all this on a high-end portable gaming device. There’s a lot to like there.
He also praised the power of Sony’s multi-core GPU, saying during the PlayStation Meeting that it “is roughly four times as powerful as any portable we’ve previously seen.”
