Sony Corporation are considering a full two-week shut down of some of its premises in Japan over the summer in an effort to conserve energy to help Japan during its power shortages. The issue of energy has been an ongoing problem since the earthquake and tsunami hit last month and looks like it could last a few more months.
Japan’s government set energy-saving targets last week, asking manufacturers to do what they can to reduce consumption. Sony itself is looking into bringing forward various holidays, which would give their workers about two weeks off this summer. Sony employees would then make up that time off later in the year, hopefully when the shortages around Japan have been resolved.
Sony’s George Boyd recently talked with the BBC about this very issue.
We are looking to provide two weeks of holidays to workers to alleviate the electricity consumption. We are likely to bring the work hours forward to cut electricity usage on a day-to-day basis as well.
As gamers we hope that all of this does not delay products such as the NGP but more importantly, we just hope that all these issues in Japan are fixed and the people there can rebuild after this tragedy.
