Naughty Dog Charts Up Split-Screen Multiplayer

Naughty Dog recently held a press event at which the company told the world that split-screen multiplayer action that will be coming to the PS3 title Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.

There will be a beta phase for the multiplayer, currently slated to begin on July 5 of this year. Players will be able to customize characters, at least visually. Whether there will be any sort of ability growth/development hasn’t yet been specified; all that was shown at the preview event was aesthetics. Gameplay tweaks include sprinting and the ability to interact with enemies while hanging from ledges.
Naughty Dog co-president Christophe Balestra said in an interview that he wanted to bring more of the “cool, cinematic moments” from the single player of the first two games into the multiplayer of the third. He noted:

[Jumping] from truck to truck or trying to catch up with a plane that’s about to take off. …All those things like the cool, cinematic moments like we’ve got in the single player, we just wanted to bring that to multiplayer.

Asked if he meant any particular films when he said “cinematic,” Balestra pointed out that no, he didn’t necessarily mean particular movies, but meant serious action:

It’s more…about our ambition and our craziness; just trying to achieve something that’s impossible. We always try to do that, I guess. It’s more like trying to take what we’ve done in Uncharted 2, take it to another level for the single player and also take that experience to the multi.

On the topic of 3D, Balestra expressed excitement, but also made it a point to say that it would not be constant, and often times be “more subtle” than a lot of games and movies jumping on the 3D craze, and “not trying to abuse it.” In his words, the company is “trying to do it right.” The game’s 3D, as with many movies and games, will be optional.
