I Can’t Lie, Tokyo Jungle Looks Horrible

Rock and roll legends Guns-n-Roses once screamed, “Do you know where you are? You’re in the jungle, baby. You’re gonna die.” When I look at these brand new Tokyo Jungle screenshots sent out by Sony Computer Entertainment Japan, that’s pretty much I what I think — nay, what I hope for.

The unique concept of the game held some promise; Tokyo as we know it is no more, and it’s been overrun by…seemingly every animal ever, from polar bears, to beagles, to lions, to raptors, elephants, kangaroos, and more. Now, graphics aren’t everything, and this could still end up having some really fun gameplay despite its hilariously bad visuals, but man, looking at these screens while getting ready to post was funny for all the wrong reasons. My favorite shot is near the end, when there’s a bear standing up and there’s light on his back…and yet there’s a shadow behind him. Something looked off, and it only took a couple of seconds to see why the screens seemed so odd. The animal models just look very pasted into the backgrounds, like bad Photoshop jobs with creatures from other games.

Here, take a gander at these:

Many were wondering about the game’s status, since games like Disaster Report 4 were canceled due to the Tohoku Disaster. The emergence of new screens seems to say that this game still exists after all, though. Tokyo Jungle is currently penciled in for a 2011 release.
