Yoshinori Ono can’t have vacation time scheduled any time soon. With Marvel Vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds slated to get more DLC and Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition coming to consoles, Ono-san’s production schedule stays full. Despite the workload, Yoshinori Ono is also promoting possibly his biggest title yet: Street Fighter X Tekken. In a recent interview, he provided a few details on how combat will be structured.
In a recent interview with EGM, Yoshinori Ono makes it clear he understands the architecture of both games that current players of both have nothing to worry about. Yoshinori Ono said:
Street Fighter has always had a slower pace, it’s always been more deliberate, while Tekken is more aggressive. So we’re trying to merge the two together into something completely new.
An entirely new control-scheme, one that suits the different button layouts of both games, would be an ideal situation for fighting game fans when the title arrives early next year. One of the challenges in crossover titles—such as one of my favorites that I still play Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium 2001—is being able to tweak the controls so that, more-or-less, you can simply import your current fighting strategy into a new title adjusting to a new feature set. If Ono-san is able to deliver and give players something “completely new”, we might be looking at the next title to dominate living-rooms, and the professional fighting game circuit.
