Sega Announces New PSP RPG

Sega has announced that its recent RPG 7th Dragon will soon become a franchise, as a new game is set to arrive on the PlayStation Portable. Developed by Imageepoch and published by Sega in March 2009, the first 7th Dragon was released for the Nintendo DS. The new game will take place in Tokyo in the space-age times that will surely be our lives in the year…2020. Isn’t that only like nine years from now?

Here are the first images:

7th Dragon put players in a world dominated by Dragons and found themselves tasked with killing them all in an effort to restore human superiority. Like the RPGs of old, players created their own characters, choosing from a select few archetypes and choosing their names. The PSP version is said to have upgraded polygonal visuals with a “chibi” art style. Fans might recognize the name of the game’s director, Kazuya Niinou, as he also handled popular DS titles Trauma Center and Etrian Odyssey.

7th Dragon 2020 lacks a specific release date, but Imageepoch and Sega expect the title to be available in Japan some time in the fall of 2011, a perfectly reasonable timeframe for a mid-budget portable. Despite having solid sales in Japan, a foreign publisher could not be found for the DS version and it never found its way outside the country. We’ll have to wait and see what happens with this PSP title.
