The great thing about having a region free device is that you can buy games cheaply from abroad or play unusual titles from Japan that will never see a worldwide release. At E3 2011, Sony have detailed whether the PlayStation Vita will be region free.
In a PlayStation Vita session, Michael Denny, Sony’s Vice President of Sony Worldwide Studios Europe, revealed that, to the best of his knowledge, the Vita’s NVG flash format would be region free. Just like the PSP and PS3, the Vita will play games from any region – although the PSP’s UMD movies weren’t region free, so if Sony pursue NVG movies they may not be region free. The 3DS, by comparison, is not region free.
Will this influence your decision on whether you will purchase the PlayStation Vita? If you’re still on the fence be sure to check out our impressions of the Vita’s launch titles from E3.
