It’s the beginning of the end. With Nintendo already announcing their next generation console, it can’t be more than a couple of years before Sony and Microsoft release their next console. In addition, many developers have already started talking about their next generation games, such as Ubisoft. The creators of the Just Cause series are also looking beyond the current generation.
Today, Avalanche Studios announced in a press release that they are going to open a new development studio in New York. The studio will be headed by former Activision and Atari executive, David Grijns. Avalanche founder, Christofer Sundberg, said in an announcement today,
David is a great addition to Avalanche Studios and brings more than 15 years of experience in production, publishing and business development to our management team. Most importantly, David’s passion and commitment to creating groundbreaking games further enchances Avalanche’s standing amongst the best development studios in the world.
The studios’ first project was described as,
The New York studio’s premiere project is an unannounced AAA title directed by Roland Lesterlin, former Creative Director at Mindspark Interactive, and targeted for release on nextgeneration platforms in 2014. A core team composed of senior staff from Avalanche’s Stockholm headquarters will be bolstered by new talent recruited from New York, North America and around the world.
The press release also says that the focus of the studio will be to develop “large-scale, online-enabled original IP for next-generation consoles, handhelds and PC.” Since all of Avalanche Studios’ games have been multiplatform or PC games, we may see Sony and Microsoft consoles being released by 2014.
