We all know it’s coming one day, but questions pertaining to when, where, and how powerful the upcoming specifications for the inevitable PS4 are important for the future of the gaming industry.
There’s no doubt that the PS3 boasts some great power, even after all these years on the market, and part of the reason is the Cell processor housed within, which was originally developed in a joint venture known as STI (Sony, Sony Computer Entertainment, Toshiba, and IBM). Of course, we can only expect that after the success of this powerful processing architecture that a successor would be created, and new evidence points to development currently ongoing in Barcelona, Spain.
Specifically, website AinaitGames.com has claimed a trusted source has informed them that the new processor is being developed at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, which houses Europe’s 25th most powerful supercomputer (as of 2009). They also report that like the original Cell was first used in the PS3, the first public retail use of the Cell chip 2 will be for the yet to be announced PlayStation 4.
Of course, rumors will be running rampant in the coming years about PS4 development, especially until Sony decides to make an official announcement. We fully expect with Sony’s continuous strategy of planning years ahead into the future it should be fully expected that the PS4 and it’s associated components should already be in development, but whether or not the Cell chip 2 is being developed in Barcelona should definitely be chalked up as rumor, for the moment. Other details are slim right now, but we’ll be sure to let you know if there’s confirmation or denial of this rumor.
