Surprising and Unexpected Mortal Kombat Announcement Incoming

When Mortal Kombat released earlier in the year, it propelled what many consider to be a classic arcade game into the next generation with the quantity of content, visual quality, and fluidity that modern gamers have come to expect. In an effort to keep the experience alive, NetherRealm Studios have vowed to support the game with DLC heading into the future. Now, they have a special announcement to make, but it isn’t a new character pack like you might suspect.

Mortal Kombat‘s Executive Producer, Ed Boon, has something special in-store for fans of the world’s favorite violent fighting game. He teased the following on Twitter:

Surprise from NetherRealm studio coming…?

Shortly afterward, Boon exclaimed that the announcement is “unexpected“. In addition to the post, Boon has directly replied to a handful of users on Twitter who have been guessing what the announcement will be. Ed Boon has confirmed that IT WILL NOT be:

  • Mortal Kombat 9 related
  • Mortal Kombat Mythologies related
  • DLC character(s)

The fact that it won’t be a DLC character leads me to believe that it’s related to Mortal Kombat: Vitality, the Vita game that has helped further strengthen Sony’s portable line-up for next year. But that’s only a guess, and although Ed Boon should be making the announcement shortly, I can’t help but continue thinking about what it could possibly be, and what it’ll mean for the series.
