Square Enix’s upcoming sequel to Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII-2, has plenty of new features that weren’t in the previous game, including Cinematic Action events and a new battle system. The screenshots and video released today by the RPG publisher highlight some of those features.
The video primarily focuses on Paradigm Shifts and shows a bit of footage of Cinematic Action events. Serah and Noel take down a number of enemies and demonstrate a number of shifts before the action culminates with a Cinematic Action.
The screenshots below show a number of typical Final Fantasy events — cinematic conversations, inventory screens, etc. — but also show a new dialogue selection system called “Live Trigger.” The system is an unusual addition for a Final Fantasy installment and looks more like it resembles branching dialogue trees from EA and BioWare’s sci-fi RPG series, Mass Effect. Also, there are screenshots showing details about monsters and what roles they may serve in your battle party.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 will be released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on January 31, 2012.
