The Tony Hawk series has had a troubled track record over the past few years. What started out as a phenomenal, over the top, action sports franchise quickly devolved into a series of repetitive yearly rehashes. 2011 was the first year without a Tony Hawk title but it looks like the skating franchise’s yearlong break may be over.
The skating legend, Tony Hawk himself, teased he will be unveiling a new entry in the long running franchise this weekend at the Spike Video Game Awards, presumably from Activision:
I’ll be announcing the upcoming release of something new on Sat; the same day as the Spike Video Game Awards. Coincidence? I think not.
What could it take to revitalize the franchise? In my opinion they should take the game back to its arcade routes. Too much emphasis has been placed on onetime gimmicks that did nothing to further the core gameplay. I’m looking at you $100 Tony Hawk Ride skateboard peripheral or bullet-time-esque slowdown effect introduced in Tony Hawk’s Project 8.
Whatever direction the franchise may take we’ll surely find out this Saturday, December 10th.
