Electronic Arts has officially closed United Kingdom based developers Bright Light. The developer entered a period of consultation this past October, which by UK law is required when a company is considering rendering 20 or more employees redundant. With the studio now closed, employees from Bright Light are being considered for positions at Criterion and Playfish, both of which are also owned by Electronic Arts, and others have joined studios like Jagex and the nearby Supermassive Games.
The studio was originally formed as EA UK in the mid-90s and was eventually rebranded as Bright Light with the formation of the EA Play Label in 2007. Since then they have developed three Harry Potter titles including last summer’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II for the PlayStation 3, as well as several handheld games, including the PSP version of Need For Speed Shift. It’s unknown how many developers lost their job, with the BBC reporting that Bright Light consisted of 100 developers back in 2007.
