Another day, another lyric from ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ – four calling birds. With calling on the mind, the Daily Reaction crew of Seb and Dan talk about Cross Game Chat on the PS3.
Seb: Aaaaargh. Get over Cross Game Chat. It’s not that big of a deal, all it allows you to do is talk to people in a game you’re not playing anyway, when you really should be focusing on the game you’re playing.
Would I rather have the ability? Sure. But when it comes down to it, it’s hardly a major problem, and one that can always be circumvented by the plethora of tech devices the average gamer owns.
The reason it has been turned into such a big deal is that the 360 can do it. And when one machine can do something that the other can’t, it’s hyped up. Like Blu-ray movie playback is a great feature, but again something that has been massively overhyped as the 360 can’t play them.
The PS3 is never going to get it, it doesn’t have the RAM, but when the PS4 comes out, PlayStation-only owners will finally be able to see just how big of a deal it isn’t.
Dan: Well I do understand the fact that to some people like you Seb do not understand the point of having something like Cross Game Chat, as you lack the friends to actually utilize the feature, but some of us do in fact have a group of people that we would like to keep in touch with. The ability to organize a group of people playing different games is a great idea, as you can avoid dealing with the randoms and enjoy a conversation with people you want to actually listen too. Much in the same respect of my favorite feature of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, the ability to mute everyone not in your party is a godsend, and having that as a standard feature within the PS3/PS4 would only give people more of a reason to use the service.
While I agree the feature is not a crucial function, and the experience we have with others online is not completely hindered without the ability to host private chat rooms, as we still have options to use external programs to create a similar experience by using other tools like Skype, Google Hangouts, Mumble, or just using a phone. Yet, I would like to have all of these functions under a single platform, much like Xbox Live does, but hopefully we will see something in the future as Sony cannot ignore the most requested feature this generation.
