Sony Computer Entertainment Europe announced today that the PlayStation 3 has reached 30 million units sold across Europe, and PAL territories as of December 17th. This is a significant number that comes close to accounting for half of all PS3 sales in total (70 million.)
The CEO of SCEE, Jim Ryan, has provided a particularly positive quote to go along with the upbeat occasion:
This is a major milestone for us and clearly shows just how popular the PlayStation brand and products are within Europe and the PAL territories. We are really pleased with the success of the PS3 system over the last six years, and are committed to continuing our support of the platform with high quality products and titles that are of the caliber that PlayStation fans have come to expect.
Jim Ryan continues on to highlight 3 PS3 cornerstone classics:
- LittleBigPlanet
- Gran Turismo
- Wonderbook: Book of Spells
I’ll forgo critical commentary on the above list, in a thinly veiled effort to remain civil.
Currently, the Xbox 360 dominates the North American market, whereas PlayStation products seem to fair much better in Europe (and Japan, although the market is much smaller there.) Since PS3, and Xbox 360 are generally equal in overall worldwide sales, yet vary wildly by region – I’m curious to hear where our readers are from, and if they know more Xbox 360, or PlayStation 3 owners.
