We’ve covered the fact that the PlayStation 4 requires PlayStation Plus to access online multiplayer functions for most titles quite a bit on PSLS, with Dan and Sebastian discussing what it means in the latest Daily Reaction.
For people in certain countries without a PlayStation Store, such as a user from Romania who posted on the EU PS Blog today, they wouldn’t even have the opportunity to play online due to the lack of an option to purchase PlayStation Plus. Answering this concern was Fred Dutton, SCEE Blog Manager:
Unfortunately at this time gamers in countries which do not have a Store cannot access online multi-player features. However, we are considering every measure to offer PlayStation Store services to these territories as soon as possible. To clarify, the affected territories are: Bahrain, Lebanon, Romania, Oman, Slovakia, Malta, Cyprus and Iceland.
Since the PS4 launch is still a ways down the road, it’s possible they could find a fix before then, but as of right now, it looks like everyone in Bahrain, Lebanon, Romania, Oman, Slovakia, Malta, Cyprus and Iceland won’t be able to play their PS4 online. They will of course be able to play offline, but it’s still a blow to people living in those regions. There may be a workaround, like buying PS+ subscriptions for other regions, but whether that is possible remains to be seen.
