As excited as we are for Grand Theft Auto V and tomorrow’s gameplay trailer, we can’t help but feel a little sad that the game is only set for current gen consoles. Luckily, Rockstar’s other teams are hard at work on next gen titles.
Rockstar San Diego are developing a next gen open world game, presumably a new Red Dead, and now we can reveal Rockstar Toronto also have a next gen open world game up their sleeves.
Rockstar Toronto may not be the best known of the R* studios, having mostly collaborated on titles with other teams, but in 2012 the studio merged with Rockstar Vancouver, the guys behind Max Payne 3. Along with the merger, Rockstar began hiring for another 50 staff members and moved to a bigger office – so Toronto is now a rather large developer.
That’s why it’s interesting to see a job listing PSLS has uncovered for a “large scale” title, and another asking for experience with “large open-world environments”, which is in direct contrast to the very linear Max Payne 3. The job post for an environment artist then says:
You will be designing, building and texturing the world, have the technical knowledge to achieve great looking results and the skill to get the most from next-gen consoles.
To doubly confirm that the title is indeed for consoles, one listing asks for “experience with XBox and Sony platform SDK’s for networking”.
Meanwhile, over on LinkedIn, one R* Toronto dev calls it an untitled project, and lists several open-worldy mechanics:
Designed and implemented populations with behaviors.
Worked with programmers to update tools for development needs.
Maintained scripts to only execute procedures when mission conditions were met.
Designed and requested art assets for populated areas for interaction and immersion.
While another mentions an untitled project on multiple platforms.
