2013 was a very good year for the PlayStation 4 – after a hypetastic pre-launch, the biggest console debut in history, and constantly selling out across the globe, no one doubts that the PS4 is a success. Now, we finally have some hard data, at least for the UK.
In five weeks, the PlayStation 4 sold 530,000 units in the UK according to the Entertainment Retailers Association (using Chart-Track data), while the Xbox One has sold 364,000 units in six weeks. Historically, the UK has mostly mirrored the US with console sales, with the Xbox 360 taking the lead last generation. While the PS4 is clearly on top, it should be noted that the Xbox One’s sales were still very high compared to previous launches.
PS4 hardware sales brought in £181.8m on the UK High Street, compared to the Xbox One’s £144.5m, which adds up to over £326m sales from next-gen consoles.
ERA director general Kim Bayley said:
Games continues to deliver digital sales strongly, but it was disappointing that Xbox One and PS4 came so late in 2013 and then huge demand meant stock sold out quickly. Retailers will be working hard in 2014 to maintain the sales momentum of these two great new pieces of kit.
Of course, just like in most countries, the PS4 was consistently sold out in the UK and difficult to acquire (although you can get it on Amazon now), so it would have been interesting to see how much it could have sold had there been enough stock.
