At CES today, Sony’s Andrew House took to the stage to announce what will likely be the modern day answer to backwards compatibility and the culmination of Sony’s Gaikai purchase. He revealed Sony’s new streaming service, PlayStation Now.

The new service, using the power of Gaikai, will allow streaming of classic games from previous generations to not only PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita, but also to televisions, tablets, and smartphones. Users will be able to either rent these titles on a single payment basis, or partake in a subscription model. Prices haven’t been detailed yet and its expected that launch games will be limited, but House did confirm that some of the games included would be Quantic Dream’s Beyond: Two Souls and Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed The Last of Us.

A closed beta is planned for the end of January with a full roll out expected in the summer. For the time being this service seems to only be for the US as plans for Europe were not mentioned. Sony also unveiled a cloud-based TV service, but details were scarce.

We’ll be sure to keep you updated on any new details, but what are your initial impressions of PlayStation Now? Let us know in the comments.
