Sony Financials: PS4 Launch Helps Console Totals Reach 14.6 Million

Sony’s financials for the fiscal year ending March 31st, 2014 have been revealed, with the company as a whole posting a ¥128.4 billion loss (about $1.26 billion), which they attribute to restructuring of the PC business, among other things. Going into further detail, Sony says that sales and operating revenue were actually up 14.3% compared to last year, thanks to the PS4 and a “significant increase” in smartphone sales.

Getting to the PlayStation division of Sony, sales rose 38.5% thanks to the PS4 launch and increased PS3 software sales, but there was still an operating loss of $78 million due to the production of the PlayStation 4.

Here’s your look at how much the PS4/PS3, PS Vita/PSP/Vita TV, and PlayStation software shipped during the fiscal year ending March 31st, 2014 (the year prior is in brackets):

  • PS4 and PS3 – 14.6 million (16.5 million – included PS2)
  • PS Vita, PSP, PS Vita TV – 4.1 million (7 million)
  • Software – 384 million (276 million)

Looking ahead to this fiscal year (ending March 31st, 2015), Sony expects the PlayStation division to see a small profit thanks to increased PS4 sales and network revenue, along with a decrease in costs related to the PS4’s launch. As well, here’s what Sony estimates for the PlayStation division in this fiscal year:

  • PS4 and PS3 – 17 million
  • PS Vita, PSP, PS Vita TV – 3.5 million
  • Software – 390 million
