In news that should delight PlayStation fans, according to a report by Japanese newspaper Nikkei, Sony has snagged the top spot for worldwide sales of videogame consoles for the first time in eight years.
Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE), or more commonly known as the PlayStation division, has said to have sold 18.7 million PlayStation consoles for the fiscal year to March, compared to Nintendo’s 16.31 million units. Based on both sales figures, it most likely pertains to both company’s entire console and handheld platforms.
While that might be good news, the report also states that even though the PS4 is inching closer to seven million units sold worldwide, overall sales of PlayStation hardware, which includes the PS Vita, still fell 20 percent year-on-year. The report claims that Sony is expected to stay at the number one slot for the rest of the year, as Nintendo has “few noteworthy releases” planned to push it the top spot.
The last time Sony dominated the worldwide console sales list was way back in March of 2006, which was surprisingly eight years ago.
