Wonder Boy and Monster World Creator Westone Bankrupt After 28 Years of Operation

Veteran Japanese video game developer Westone Bit Entertainment has declared bankruptcy and has entered liquidation process after 28 years of operation. The company was set up in 1986, and is most known for its Wonder Boy (later Monster World) series .

SEGA Nerds reports (via Japanese site Game Watch) that the Tokyo District Court is currently investigating the company for outstanding debt. Westone’s official website has since been taken offline while its Facebook page has been left intact. However, it’s worth noting that the company’s Facebook page hasn’t been updated since 2012.

As a result of this development, it’s unclear whether the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live versions of SEGA Vintage Collection: Monster World will be pulled or not. And while it’s too soon to speculate what happens to Westone’s IPs and intellectual properties, many are hoping that SEGA will come to the rescue.

We’ll update our readers of any further developments accordingly.
