Sony reported their Q3 Fiscal Year results for the three months ending December 31, 2014 today, revealing that 6.4 million PlayStation 4s were shipped during the quarter, up from 4.5 million shipped in Q3 of the previous fiscal year. Since launch, the PS4 has sold 18.5 million units.
In terms of sales for the Game & Network division, they rose 16.8% year-on-year to ¥531.5 billion (about $4.393 billion). Sony says, “This significant increase was primarily due to an increase in PS4 hardware unit sales, the favorable impact of foreign exchange rates, and a significant increase in network services revenue, partially offset by a decrease in PlayStation 3 […] hardware and PS3 software sales. Sales to external customers increased 19.7% year-on-year.”
As for operating income, Sony saw an ¥11.2 billion ($93 million) write-down because “the latest forecast of PS TV unit sales does not reach our original forecast as a result of lower than expected unit sales in the current quarter.”
Here’s a look at how everything performed during Q3 of this fiscal year, with Q3 of the previous fiscal year in brackets:
- PlayStation 4 hardware – 6.4 million (4.5 million)
- PlayStation 3 hardware – 1.1 million (3.3 million)
- PS Vita, PSP, PS TV hardware – 1.4 million (2 million)
- Software sales – ¥147 billion/$1.27 billion (¥128 billion)
- Network sales – ¥100 billion/$852 million (¥50 billion)
Looking at the full fiscal year, Sony expects to ship a total of 17.5 million consoles (PS4 and PS3), 3.5 million handhelds (PS Vita, PS TV, PSP), and ¥420 billion worth of software.
As a whole, Sony predicts a loss of ¥170 billion, which is actually ¥60 billion less than their previous estimate.
