Receiving the details from a company spokesperson, IGN confirmed yesterday that GameStop is set to start a pilot program to accept trade-ins on retro consoles, games, and accessories beginning on April 25.
Initially, the program will be available in the New York City and Birmingham markets, which total around 250 stores. If it proves successful, GameStop plans to roll this out nationally later in the year.
Eligible systems for this program include the NES, Super NES, Sega Genesis, PlayStation, N64, and Sega Dreamcast, with GameStop saying the number of games they sell will increase by “about 5,000” as a result.
What you trade in won’t immediately go to store shelves though, as everything will go through their Refurbishment Operations Center for inspection, testing, and repair, with the warranty on consoles expected to be the same as current used systems. Then, after about two months, GameStop will put them up for sale through their website and pick-up-at-store system.
If you missed the news earlier this year, GameStop is currently accepting PS2s and offering $25 credit back.
