Six Suspected Lizard Squad Members Arrested in the UK

Suspected members of infamous hacking group Lizard Squad have been arrested in the UK by British law enforcement officials. Lizard Squad, is of course, famous for hacking and downing Sony and Microsoft’s online services last year.

According to the report, the UK National Crime Agency, which is the US’ equivalent of the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation), apprehended six teenagers all believed to be part of Lizard Squad. All suspects detained for questioning this week mention that the boys arrested were all between the ages of 15-18.

Here’s what Tony Adams, head of investigations for NCA’s National Cyber Unit had to say regarding the arrests:

By paying a comparatively small fee, tools like Lizard Stresser can cripple businesses financially and deprive people of access to important information and public services.

One of our key priorities is to engage with those on the fringes of cyber criminality, to help them understand the consequences of cyber crime and how they can channel their abilities into productive and lucrative legitimate careers.

The arrests took place in Manchester, Huddersfield, Milton Keynes, Northhampton and Stockport between August 24-27, and all were male. To date, both Microsoft and Sony have yet to issue statements on the arrests, but I assume some of them are happy that some of the hackers have been apprehended.

Additionally. the NCA mentioned that officials are investigating approximately 50 more addresses linked to individuals registered on the Lizard Stresser website, but are believed to not have been part of any attacks.

This isn’t the first time a Lizard Squad member has been arrested. Earlier this year, a teenager based in London was also caught as well.

Let’s hope more of these hackers are arrested for not only interrupting our online gaming sessions, but for costing Sony, Microsoft and other victims ludicrous amounts of money as well.
