Recent creative efforts such as The Last of Us and the Uncharted series have steered Naughty Dog away from the possibility of bringing Jak and Daxter to PS4, according to the studio’s Community Strategist Arne Meyer.
Asked about the chances of seeing the two platforming mascots make the jump to the new generation, Meyer noted that Naughty Dog had at one stage considered another mainline installment, though the whimsical tone of Jak simply didn’t gel with the stories the team wanted to tell.
I would not bet in favor of it. We did try it; we did try. I mean our fans really love Jak and Daxter, so we did try. I think you’ve seen the concept art that came out when we were exploring it before we settled on the Last of Us. But all of the directions we were trying to take it just didn’t feel great. So much about these decisions is based on gut and instinct. We kept thinking, “it just doesn’t look right. It just doesn’t feel right.” The types of stories we’re telling right now really are grounded in realism.
Chances of a Jax and Daxter reboot are slim, then, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the franchise will remain on the shelf in perpetuity, with Meyer adding that “it doesn’t mean that we wouldn’t be able to do it in the future.”
What do you think, though? Would you rather Naughty Dog pursue story-driven experiences? Or return to its roots in order to bring back a dormant IP?
