Commemorating 15 years since the Killzone franchise was first hatched at Guerrilla Games, Sony has peeled back the curtain on Killzone Visual Design, a comprehensive art book that documents the series’ evolution since its inception.
Set for release on February 1, the book promises an illustrated and in-depth look at the design philosophy that has fuelled the Killzone franchise for more than a decade, from its humble debut on PlayStation 2 to the PS4 launch title Shadow Fall.
Taking to PlayStation Blog, Art Director Roy Postma shed new light on the creation of the villainous Helghast, and how the Nazi-esque empire evolved through time.
“The whole look of the Helghast is something that really evolved over time. We went through a lot of history and photo books to gather inspiration and reference materials for our enemy character. We didn’t set out to create the most iconic look possible — it was more like, okay, how can we make this menacing, sort-of functional, believable character.”
Arriving in two separate packages, the standard book is priced at $50.00, while the premium limited edition version goes for $130.00.
Pre-orders are now open for Killzone Visual Design via the official PlayStation Gear store ahead of its debut on February 1.
