Phil Spencer Hopeful Sony Can Find Success With PlayStation VR, Says Uncharted 4 “Will Be a Great Game”

Xbox head honcho Phil Spencer has been marinating on the future of virtual reality, and why he’s hopeful Sony can find success with the release of PlayStation VR.

In an interview with GameSpot, the Head of Xbox touched base on the embryonic nature of VR in general, before outlining the ways in which Microsoft’s strategy differs from that of Sony’s.

“I think VR is still right at the beginning. Taking that to a closed ecosystem today, I think to me is just too early. It doesn’t mean that it doesn’t belong in console…I hope Sony has success with what they’re trying to do because I think it’s good for our industry as innovations like VR take off. But for me, and where we are with Xbox, my bet is putting the development tools in the hands of literally millions of people who can go on Windows and start building their own VR experiences is likely to lead to faster content innovation than a closed ecosystem would.”

Currently, Microsoft is developing HoloLens, the augmented reality device first revealed in 2015, while Sony is competing with Oculus and Vive via PlayStation VR. At the time of writing, there’s no price point or release date for either device.

In related news, Spencer also touched base on his most-anticipated games of 2016, with Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End getting a mention via the executive’s Twitter feed.
