Bearing the codename Blue Steel at the time, it’s been revealed that developer Factor 5 was once working on a now-cancelled Superman game.
Word comes by way of Unseen64, revealing that Superman: Man of Steel was designed to be “an open world action game.” In partnership with Brash Entertainment, the studio best known for Star Wars: Rogue Squadron planned to launch the licensed title across PS3, Xbox 360, and the Wii. It should be noted that the latter version didn’t make it much further past the drawing board.
Pitched as an homage to Superman media of old, Factor 5’s Man of Steel would have included notable villains from the DC canon, including Darkseid, Kalibak, Bizarro, Brainiac, Metallo and Supes’ arch-nemesis, Lex Luthor. Flying would have played a major part in the game, while a multiplayer component was also considered before development ground to a halt.
According to Unseen64, it was “ill-advised business decisions” that steered Brash Entertainment into bankruptcy in 2008, eventually leading to the cancellation of Factor 5’s title soon thereafter.
This is by no means the first time that Unseen 64 has unearthed a canned project, after shedding light on Volition’s PSP game, Saints Row: Undercover, earlier this year.
