Opinionated analyst Michael Pachter has claimed that Sony’s E3 track record leaves a lot to be desired, even going so far as to say that if one compiled a list of the biggest disappointments in the event’s history, they “would all be from Sony’s press conferences.”
Speaking to GamingBolt, Pachter was critical of the platform holder’s release timeline when it comes to certain games, calling out Team Ico’s long-gestating The Last Guardian in particular — “The Last Guardian for the fifteenth time? Is that coming out? Do we have a date yet?”
Later in the piece, the critic clarified his statement regarding past disappointments.
“I gotta say, if you ever want to look at the ten biggest disappointments from E3 of all time, they would all be from Sony’s press conferences. And by disappointment, I don’t necessarily mean something bad happening at Sony’s conference — I mean something was announced which never showed up. I remember the PlayStation 3 press conference, before the PS3 ever came out, and they actually showed one of the characters from Red Dead Redemption… it was clearly a western from Rockstar, and Read Dead Redemption came out in 2010.”
When it comes to this year’s trade show, Pachter remained pessimistic, asking if anyone is excited about the event in the first place. Said he: “So…who cares what Sony will show at E3 this year? It probably means it won’t come out some time in the near future anyway. So, they could probably showcase The Last of Us 2, and say that’s coming ‘sometime.’”
Pachter has been off base before, of course, most recently after claiming that Sony wouldn’t unveil the price and date of PlayStation VR until E3 2016. But which side of the fence do you fall on?
