While the game may be off to a great start, the Ratchet & Clank movie failed to make much of an impact at the box office this weekend, debuting in 7th in the United States and grossing $4.7 million – $4.8 million, according to initial estimates.
Playing in 2,900 theaters, Ratchet & Clank made approximately $1.4 million Friday, $1.99 million on Saturday, and $1.3 million on Sunday. For comparison, Zootopia, which played in 2,500 theaters in its 9th week of release, finished in 6th place and made $5 million over the weekend.
As Deadline explained, “The pic, based on a Sony PlayStation/Insomniac Game, couldn’t compete for the young male demo against The Jungle Book. Forty percent of the film’s demo was under 25 and the majority of males as well as those over 25 gave it only a B CinemaScore.”
It remains to be seen what the debut of the Ratchet & Clank movie means for the Sly Cooper movie, which was announced in 2014 for a 2016 release.
