In case you didn’t know, Respawn Entertainment just did the unthinkable and confirmed that all future Titanfall 2 DLC for maps and modes will be 100 percent free.
With today’s microtransaction-infused video game world, that’s kind of a big deal, right? So why are they doing this? It’s mostly for the players according to the studio. In an interview, Respawn co-founder Vince Zampella commented that they’re doing this whole Titanfall 2 DLC is free thing as to make sure the player base won’t be split.
Zampella: We’re giving away all the maps and modes…we don’t want to split the community.
Producer Drew McCoy also chimes in and while the studio hasn’t really decided on how to provide paid post-launch content for Titanfall 2, McCoy wants players to trust them, as the studio is trusting the players, for buying the full priced $60 game.
McCoy: We need to trust the player and they need to trust us…Trust that if we do the right thing – not sell maps and modes – we’ll get more people investing with us, investing in the game as a whole. They’re going to trust us not screw them over and they can be happy with their $60 versions.
Zampella adds that regarding paid Titanfall 2 DLC hasn’t been decided yet, but muses that paid cosmetic items “might” be what pays for that sweet free Titanfall 2 DLC.
I, for one, hope Respawn strikes gold with this business model. I mean, fracturing the community with different map packs and such is one of the main complaints gamers have when it comes to multiplayer-oriented expansions, no? Glad to see a studio trying to do something fresh instead of just pushing for Season Passes and charging for anything that comes out after the game’s launch.
Titanfall 2 is set for release this October 28 for the PS4, Xbox One and PC.
