No Criminal Charges Filed Against Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Dev After 4-Year Investigation

Four years after 38 Studios’ closing, the investigation into the developer for criminal activity has come to an end without any charges being filed. A press release by the Rhode Island State Police and Attorney General states that there isn’t enough evidence to do so.

The quantity and quality of the evidence of any criminal activity fell short of what would be necessary to prove any allegation beyond a reasonable doubt and as such the Rules of Professional Conduct precluded even offering a criminal charge for grand jury consideration.

Known for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, 38 Studios’ high-profile bankruptcy and closure came after a $75 million loan supported by the state’s taxpayers, resulting in allegations of fraud and criminal activity. The Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation ended up filing a lawsuit against founder Curt Schilling alongside a few other executives, which Schilling recently called a “fake *** witch hunt.”

The Attorney General’s office has said that charges can still be filed if more information comes to light in the future. Additionally, the outcome of this investigation doesn’t impact the ongoing civil suit and U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission investigations.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, which was the only game the studio released, received positive reviews but failed to sell enough copies to earn a profit.
