Bungie Addresses Unobtainable Destiny 2 Trophy, Says They Are Looking at Solutions

When Curse of Osiris launched for Destiny 2 earlier this week, it was quickly made apparent that one of the trophies in the base game’s trophy list was rendered unobtainable by the update. As the endgame Power level increased with the expansion, Bungie also increased the level of endgame activities like the Prestige Raid and Prestige Nightfall. These activities are tied to a trophy that requires completion of one of them. In this week’s Bungie blog post, they acknolwedged the issue and said they are looking at solutions.

We are aware that there are some Destiny 2 trophies and achievements that have become unavailable to players who have not purchased Curse of Osiris. We are committed to fixing this issue, and are currently investigating a solution. Please stay tuned for more updates on this topic as progress is made.

The trophy in question is called “The Prestige” which requires players to “Complete the Leviathan Raid or a Nightfall Strike on Prestige difficulty.” That difficulty has now been raised to 330 Power level, and it isn’t possible to reach that cap without buying the Curse of Osiris expansion for Destiny 2. In addition, it brought up the difficulty of the standard modes for the Raid that Nightfall, so that players who don’t have the expansion will have a more difficult time completing this content, even though they still have access to it.

It’s good to see that Bungie has quickly acknowledged the issue, but it highlights some of the problems inherent to splitting the player base with paid DLC and expansions. A balance must be maintained between keeping old content challenging for current players while also not leveling it away from players who don’t want to pay for the expansions, or who perhaps can’t at this moment. The issue is often referred to as “power creep” and is a common problem that MMOs and living world games find themselves facing as they update and add new content.
