Epic Games is getting serious about cheating in Fortnite. The game developer and publisher announced it had acquired Kamu, a game security and live management company based in Helsinki. Kamu’s Easy Anti-Cheat software is currently installed on 100 million PCs worldwide and is used for over 80 games, including Fortnite.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney made the following statement about the acquisition:
Kamu’s team and tools have been key to building a vibrant Fortnite multiplayer experience that’s fair for all players. Building and launching games today is incredibly challenging, and only half the battle. Kamu’s tools for managing live games help developers grow and sustain their games successfully after launch. At Epic, we succeed when developers succeed!
Kamu CEO Simon Allaeys also released a statement:
Battling cheating in games was just the start; today our products also help developers stay competitive by identifying player needs as quickly as they emerge.
Despite the Epic acquisition, both companies will look to bring the software to a variety of more games and engines. In addition, Epic Games will look to establish a presence in Finland.
Epic Games has made a point in dealing with cheating and security matters. Recently, the company rewards players who enabled two-factor authentification with a special emote. Cheating was also a big story in 2018’s Fortnite Summer Skirmish, when the eventual winner was accused of using a mouse and keyboard.
